Pharmaceutical needs assessment: what are people saying about services?

A look at what minority ethnic groups, males, young people and those living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods have to say about pharmaceutical needs assessment.

Summary

We spoke to 78 people in a series of focus groups. We targeted seldom heard populations to see how those people use pharmacy services and their experiences.

Key findings

  • People find pharmacies are easier to access for advice than making an appointment to see a GP.
  • There was limited awareness of the range of services pharmacies can offer.
  • People had a mix of negative and positive experiences with pharmacy services. The opposing views led to development of reccomendations.

We recommend development of services to create a patient-centred approach that makes sure every contact counts.

Promotion of pharmacy services could encourage people to access healthcare in a way that is more convenient for them.
