Listening to homeless and vulnerably housed people

The team worked with Midland Heart Housing Association, to establish a monthly breakfast club at Saltbrook Place, a provider of supported housing. We listened to the experiences of the residents to explore the support needed.

Summary

From conversations with residents, group discussions and creative workshops, a common theme emerged. For many, just one change in circumstances triggered a spiral into homelessness.

Key findings

  • Residents asked for clearer information sharing. Saltbrook Place now puts leaflets through each resident's door.
  • Help managing finances was a concern for residents. 1-2-1 sessions are now available for people to help with budgeting.
  • People told us they needed more support with mental health issues. Aspire4U are now supporting residents with mental health support. There is also a sensory room available for residents to relax.

Because of the openness of the vulnerably housed people, we were able to gain a greater insight into the issues they may struggle with and the changes they want from support services. We had help from Dudley CVS to run creative art sessions which allowed people to open up visually.

Saltbrook Place has made positive changes to address the needs of residents. However, there are still improvements that can be made. We hope the voices of vulnerably housed people continue to be listened to.
