Community response to the COVID-19 Pandemic

Dudley Council for Voluntary Services (CVS) enlisted volunteers to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and support vulnerable people during a challenging time.

Summary

The Dudley Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) response to the pandemic and lockdown centred on working closely with Dudley Council, healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. 984 people received help from one of their volunteers. This report examines the impact of voluntary support.

Key outcomes

  • Collaboration among partner organisations was instrumental in quickly mobilizing resources and filling the gaps in support for vulnerable people.
  • Volunteers were crucial in ensuring that shielding and vulnerable individuals had access to food and medication.
  • Volunteers offered emotional support and companionship to those who were isolating and had limited contact with friends and family.

Despite the support provided, there were ongoing challenges and concerns. Some individuals reported difficulties in accessing healthcare services, such as getting through to GP practices or pharmacies.

Loneliness and isolation remained significant issues, especially for those living alone or with limited social connection.

Continued collaboration between services will be crucial in transitioning to a post-COVID world.
