Engaging with elderly Asian communities in Dudley

A chance encounter in Brierley Hill town centre led to Healthwatch Dudley working with Wellington Road Community Centre to support the health and wellbeing of the elderly Asian community.

Summary

People at Wellington Road Community Centre told us they wanted to become more active and be able to look after their health. We arranged a Community Information Celebration event and supported the formation of groups to help people take control of their health and wellbeing.

Key outcomes

  • 16 health checks were conducted for elderly Indian men and women by Solutions 4 Health.
  • Two IT courses were held (one for men and one for women) at Wellington Road Community Centre by Dudley Council Adult & Community Learning. 
  • Citizens Advice Dudley & Wolverhampton planned Self Management Courses.

We followed up in January 2024 and were pleased to see classes are still ongoing and other services remained involved with the centre.
